Why does Mendeley Web Importer for Safari state ‘This extension can read and alter web pages you visit and see your browsing history on all websites?’

Last updated on March 17, 2025

Mendeley Web Importer requests full access to all web pages that the user is actively trying to import from, this is in order to scrape the pages to obtain metadata and find any PDFs that are linked on the target page.

Mendeley Web Importer does not obtain any private or personal information, such as passwords, phone numbers or credit card details.

Safari is not able to distinguish what Mendeley Web Importer does on the webpage when the extensions scrapes it for metadata and PDFs, therefore Safari provides a standard security message to warn users of potential vulnerabilities that could occur when the user gives read permissions to extensions that may be attempting malicious conduct.

Please be assured that Mendeley Web Importer will never attempt to access this private information. Our extension is heavily tested by Safari to ensure we meet strict guidelines for the safety of their users and their information.
