How can I add new references to my Library in Mendeley Reference Manager?

Last updated on September 18, 2025

How

  1. Drag and drop files – add references by dragging and dropping a PDF into your library, the application will automatically extract the details from the document and create a library entry.
  2. Drag and drop folders - add references by dragging and dropping a folder containing PDFs into your library, the application will automatically extract the details from the documents in the folder and create a library entry/entries.
  3. Add file(s) – use the 'Add References’ button and select 'Import File(s)' to select a specific paper from a location on your computer and add it to your library.
  4. Add folder(s) – use the 'Add References’ button and select 'Import Folder(s)' to select a specific folder from a location on your computer and add its contents to your library.
  5. Manually create an entry – use 'Add New' and click on 'Add Entry Manually' to manually input the details of a reference. For the beta you are only able to add Journal articles and Books, the ability to create documents of a different type will be available in a future release. You can use a DOI to look up details of a reference automatically; enter the identifier into the DOI field and an automatic lookup will be performed and if the DOI is found then the metadata will be populated. Please note that adding authors manually is now on multiple lines.
  6. Import a BibTeX, RIS or EndNote XML file - there are several ways you can do this:
    • Via Drag and Drop – Drag and drop the file from your local state and the application will automatically extract the details from the documents and create a library entry or multiple entries.
    • Add directly from your computer – use 'Add New' and select 'Import Library' and then select the type of file you wish to import. Select the file on your local drive and then click open and the file will import.
  7. Create a watched folder – there are several ways you can do this:
    • Use the 'Add References’ button and select 'Set up watched folder'. You will be prompted to choose a folder from a location on your computer. Any PDFs kept in this folder will automatically be imported to your Library.
    • Go to ‘Account & Help’ and select ‘Preferences’. In the Watched Folder tab, select ‘Choose folder to watch’. You will be prompted to choose a folder from a location on your computer. Any PDFs kept in this folder will automatically be imported to your Library.
