Last updated on November 03, 2021

Knovel’s Material Property Search, formerly Data Search, helps you locate information that may be hidden in large complex tables. For more information, also watch our Video Tutorial on Material Property Seach.

How

Follow these steps to use Material Property Search:

  1. Go to the Material Property Search page.
    • Click ‘Property Search’ from the left-hand navigation menu, then click 'Open Material Property Search', or,
    • Click the Property Search tab located behind the 'Search Knovel' tab on the Knovel home page, then click ‘Open Material Property Search’; or,
    • Select 'Special Tools > Material Property Search' from the 'Search Knovel' pull-down menu in the Search box on the Knovel home page.
  2. Use the query builder to construct your search. You may search by material or substance name, by property or properties, or by both.
    • To search by material or substance name, enter a material or substance name into the 'Material or Substance Name' field.
    • To search by property or properties, drag and drop the property onto the search canvas (query builder), or double-click the property into the query builder. You can find the property by either:
      • Browsing the Properties list.
      • Entering a name into the ‘Find by Property Name’ search box. As you type, the property list is filtered based on the characters you type.
        • You may look for a property using synonymous property names. When a match to a property synonym is made, the Knovel Property Name will be shown, appended with an [S] for synonym. Hovering over the [S] will show you the Property’s synonyms that matched what you typed, allowing you to determine if this is, in fact, the property of interest to you.
    • To search by both material or substance name and property, follow the first two bullets outlined in Step 2 above. Note that the Properties list will be filtered to only the applicable Properties for the material entered which are encountered in Knovel’s tabular content.
  3. Use operators to further specify your search.
    • Knovel allows you to use the following numeric operators:
      • Exists: the table or graph contains data for that property
      • Equals (=)
      • Less than or equal to (<=)
      • Greater than or equal to (>=)
      • Is between (>=/<=)
    • You can enter numeric values or numeric ranges.
    • You can select units of measurements using the drop-down menu.
    • You can combine up to three properties in the query builder using AND, OR and NOT operators.
  4. Click 'Results' in the lower right-hand corner of the search canvas to retrieve the search results.
