How do I view facets in a chart?
Last updated on November 23, 2024
The categories of information in the Refine results pane are called facets, and you can easily view these facets in a chart format.
For example, if you search for the term transcription factors, you can see the occurrence of this term across the different categories to help you know where to focus your search.
How
Follow these steps to view facets in a chart:
- Conduct a Quick or Expert search. The Document Results list displays.
- From the Refine results pane on the left side of the page, click the down arrow to expand any of the facets (if needed).
- Click the chart icon to open a new window where an image of up to the top 10 results in the facet will appear in a bar chart format.
Note: In addition to a list of results, the Document type facet provides an option to display a bar chart within the current view facet. This bar chart will display if there are a minimum of three document types in the results. It will contain a maximum of five document types in this current view.
- Click ‘Bar chart’ at the bottom of the Document type facet to view a bar chart.
- Click ‘List’ to return to a list of results.
- After accessing the chart icon on the pop-up window (mentioned previously in the ‘Review current view chart’ section of this FAQ), click the chart context menu (represented by 3 horizontal lines) at the top right side of this new page to select the following options to work with this bar chart:
- Print chart
- Download chart as a PNG image
- Download chart as a JPEG image
- Download chart as a PDF document
- Download chart as a SVG vector image
- Click ‘X’ to close this current chart view.
- Click ‘View more.’ A pop-up window opens which contains up to the first 60 results for the facet.
- Click the bar chart (second) icon at the top of the pop-up window to see up to the first 60 results in a bar chart format.
- If you want to increase or decrease the total number of facet results displayed in the bar chart format, you can select one of the following options:
- Click ‘Max’ at the bottom of this pop-up window to see a maximum of up to 160 results for this facet.
- Click ‘10’ if you want to decrease the number of entries to 10 in the bar chart format.
- Click ‘60’ to return to the first 60 results displayed in the bar chart format.
Note: If the chart view had fewer than 60 initial results, this option will not display.
- Click the chart context menu at the top right side of this page to select the same options (e.g., ‘Print chart’ or ‘Download PDF document’), for working with this ‘View more’ bar chart as previously mentioned for the current view chart.
- Click ‘X’ to close this ‘View more’ bar chart display.
In addition to viewing the facet results in a bar chart format, you may also view the facet results as a pie chart for the Document type and Language facets.
- From the Document type or Language facets, click ‘View more.’ A pop-up window opens which contains all the results for the facet.
- Click the pie chart (third) icon to see the available Document type or Language results in a pie chart format.
- Click ‘X’ to close this ‘View more’ pie chart display.
There are several options for working with this pie chart:
- Click the chart context menu at the top right side of this page to select the same options (e.g., ‘Print chart’ or ‘Download PDF document’) for working with this ‘View more’ pie chart as previously listed for the bar chart views.
- Hover over each document type or language to see more details about each chart segment.
- Click the chart segment to restrict the search results. A new search results list displays that is limited to the contents of the individual chart segment.
- Hover over the ‘Other’ label to see specific statistics about the contents of this chart segment.
- Click ‘Other’ to view the individual components of this chart segment. An expanded view of the components displays.
- If desired, click ‘Back’ to return to the previous screen showing all document types or languages.
- Click the chart segment to restrict the search results. A new search results list displays that is limited to the contents of this individual chart segment.
