How do I view and filter additional facet results?
Last updated on March 18, 2026
After you perform a Quick, Expert, or Thesaurus search query, you will see categories of information in the Document Refine results feature. These categories are called facets, and you can easily view and filter the results of these facets.
How
After conducting a search query, follow these steps to view, filter, and select more facet results on the Document Results list:
- From the ‘Refine’ results pane on the left side of the page, click a facet name (e.g., ‘Controlled vocabulary,’ ‘Author,’ ‘Publisher,’ ‘Funding sponsor’) to open it.
- Depending upon the facet, it may already be open and displaying the first five results.
- Click ‘View more’ to see up to 60 items displayed in a pop-up window for the facet. The pop-up window opens.
- Click ‘Max’ at the bottom of the window to display a maximum of 160 items (if available).
- Click ‘10’ at the bottom of the window to decrease the number of entries to 10 results.
- After selecting more or fewer documents, you may click ‘60’ to return to the original display of the first 60 results.
- Select specific items in the window by clicking the checkbox(es).
- Click ‘Limit to’ to limit your results to only items you have selected.
- Click ‘Exclude’ to exclude items that you have selected from your results.
- Click the ‘X’ at the top right side of the window to close the display of items.

Search tips:
- Regular expressions (letters, numbers, ‘RegEx’ characters) are permitted to filter results.
- You can type just one letter, one number, or one character to begin a filter of results.
- Matches for search terms are case insensitive.
- A result item can match any portion of a search term. For example, a broad search using just the two letters ca results in items such as ‘Canada,’ ‘academy,’ ‘American,’ ‘medical,’ ‘education.’ However, a search using the narrower search terms department of science finds the result ‘department of science and technology,’ but does not find ‘department of technology.’
- If no matches are found, a warning message displays, alerting you that no items match your filter criteria.
- If you change to another view, e.g., ‘10,’ or ‘Max,’ your filter search terms are removed from the filter text box.
- The ‘Filter results text box’ is only available from the result items window. It is not available from the ‘Chart’ view.
