How do I use the Engineering Village search widget page?
Last updated on August 21, 2025
The Engineering Village search widget allows users to run Quick search queries directly from this widget page. It contains links for users to access the Engineering Village home page as well learn more about the product.
Customers can add this search widget to their own websites either embedded in an iframe or displayed as standalone HTML text using the following suggested instructions.
Embed the search widget URL via an iframe using syntax such as the following:
- <iframe src="https://static.engineeringvillage.com/widget/searchwidget.html" title="Engineering Village search widget"></iframe>
Note: If you decide to change databases as described in the ‘Replace/include other database parameters’ section below, the revised URL should be included in the iframe "src" parameter.
- View the search widget HTML source code.
- Copy and paste this source code into the customer website.
Use the search widget to run a search query in Engineering Village.
- Navigate to the Engineering Village search widget.
- In the search box, enter your search query.
- Click the magnifying glass icon. The Engineering Village Quick search results page opens in a new window.
- At this point you can select one of the following options:
- Enter additional search terms into the Quick search form.
- Refine your search on the Quick search results page.
- Return to the search widget page in the previous window.
Note: Your search query will become a Quick search against the ‘ALL’ field. The search widget defaults to the Compendex database.
You can replace the default database and/or include other database parameters into your search widget query.
Using the chart below, replace the database and/or enter additional databases as follows:
- At the end of the search widget URL, add the following static text: ?database=
- After the equal sign (=) in the URL, enter the code(s) for all the database(s) that you want to include in your search query. Use commas to separate each code.
- Although the search widget defaults to the Compendex database, the ‘cpx’ code is overwritten when you add the database parameter, so you must enter the ‘cpx’ code (along with any other database codes you may want to add) if you want to include Compendex in your search query.
- Press ‘Enter.’ The search widget displays. The updated ‘Databases’ label on the search widget contains the names of the databases that you have appended to the search widget URL.
Examples:
Use the Inspec and GEOBASE databases for your search query:
https://static.engineeringvillage.com/widget/searchwidget.html?database=ins,geo
The ‘Databases’ which display are ‘Inspec, GEOBASE’
