How can I use my search history?
Last updated on March 17, 2026
The ‘Search history on Engineering Village’ page lists searches completed within each session. This list indicates the following information for each search query:
- Search number (#1 to a maximum of #50)
- Number of document results for each search query
- Database(s)
- Query terms
- Specific query details such as search type, publication years searched, sorting type, and autostemming (enabled or disabled)
- Date and time
From this page, you may email, print, or download your search history. Additionally, you may rerun, modify, or delete searches stored within the current session, or you may pause your search history. You may also create email alerts and save searches for future use.
Note: If you have an account with Elsevier and have signed in, your search history is automatically saved for seven days from your most recent sign-in.
How
Follow the steps below to access your search history:
- Click the ‘Search history’ tab at the top of the Engineering Village page. The ‘Recent results’ summary opens.
This summary contains the five most recent results (in descending order) in your search history and the following information:- Search number
- Number of results
- Search query
- From this summary, click the text from a search query to view or rerun a specific search.
- Click ‘View all results’ to access your entire search history for this session.
You may access the following features in the search history feature:
Delete all the search queries from your search history.
- Click the ‘Delete all’ button above the search results. The ‘Delete all search history’ window opens.
- Click ‘Delete all’ to delete all the search queries in your search history. Your search history is deleted, and the page will display text stating that you have no search history.
See How do I email, print, or download my search history? for details. All records from your search history will be included in this feature.
See How can I combine my searches? for details. You cannot combine searches from different databases or different publication year ranges.
- Review your queries in the Search query column.
- Click ‘Details’ for further information for each search query. A pop-up box opens, which includes the following details:
- Type of search (Quick, Expert, or Thesaurus)
- The publication years searched
- Sort used
- Whether ‘Autostemming’ was on or off
- Click ‘Details’ (or the pop-up box) to close it.
From the ‘Search query’ column, click the search query link to rerun the search. The Search results list displays your new results.
Note: Search history displays up to 50 queries in descending order of occurrence. Beginning with your 51st query, the oldest query is automatically deleted from the history. Clicking a search to rerun it does not create a new entry in search history.
See How do I create and use email alerts? to use this feature.
You may have a maximum of 260 email alerts and saved searches.
When you create an email alert, it appears on the ‘Alerts and Saved searches’ page, which you may access by clicking the ‘Alerts’ tab at the top of any Engineering Village page.
Note: The ‘Create email alert’ feature is only available when you have created an Engineering Village account and have signed in.
See How do I create and manage saved searches? to use this feature.
When you save a search, it appears on the ‘Alerts and Saved searches’ page, which you may access by clicking the ‘Alerts’ tab at the top of any Engineering Village page.
You may have up to 260 saved searches and email alerts.
Note: The ‘Save search’ feature is only available when you have created an Engineering Village account and have signed in.
- From the ‘Search actions’ column, click the ‘pencil’ icon to modify your search. The Search page for the specific search type you used for your query (Quick, Expert, or Thesaurus) opens.
- Edit your search query as desired.
From the ‘Search actions’ column, click the ‘x’ to remove a specific search query.
When the ‘Pause search history’ feature is enabled, your search history is only retained for your current search session. When you leave your search session and sign back in later, your search history from your previous session(s) will be empty. Thus, while the ‘Pause search history’ feature is enabled, any searches from your existing session will only be retained for that session unless you disable the ‘Pause search history’ feature and turn on the ‘Save search history’ feature. At that point, all searches from that current search session will be retained.
During your paused search session, you can save any of your search queries to your ‘Saved searches’ list if you wish.
- In the box above the first search query, click the ‘Save search history’ toggle switch to pause the search history. The ‘Pause search history’ window opens and explains the ‘Pause search history’ feature.
- Click ‘Pause.’ The ‘Save search history’ toggle switch is grayed out, and the ‘Paused’ label displays.
- To disable the ‘Pause search history’ feature and turn the search history feature back on, click the grayed out toggle switch. The ‘Turn on search history?’ window displays.
- Click ‘Turn on’ to save your search queries in your search sessions. The ‘Save search history’ orange toggle switch points to ‘On’ to confirm that the option to save your search history has been enabled.
Note: You must have created an Elsevier account and be signed into your account to enable the ‘Pause search history’ feature. The ‘Save search history’ feature is turned on by default when you are signed in, so you must enable the ‘Pause search history’ if you do not want your search queries to be retained in your search history.
