How can I add a password to my Elsevier user account?

Last updated on June 19, 2024

There are several scenarios where it is useful to add a password to your user account after you have activated personalization via your institution or organization. Three examples are listed below:

  • You would like to sign in to an Elsevier product that doesn't support institutional sign in yet
  • Your organization plans to discontinue federated authentication
  • You will be leaving the institution

When you add a password, you will be able to keep one Elsevier user account and sign in to it with either your email and password or with your institutional credentials.

Note: Signing in to Elsevier with your email and password will not necessarily provide you with access to your institutional subscriptions as access to them depends on additional factors.

How

  1. Go to the Elsevier Sign in page. The Elsevier ‘Sign in’ page opens and your email address will be pre-populated under the ‘Email’ label.
  2. Click the ‘Stay signed in’ checkbox if you would like to remain signed into Elsevier.
    • It is not recommended to click this if you are using a shared device.
  3. Click the ‘Elsevier may send you information about relevant products and events’ checkbox if you do not wish to receive messages from Elsevier.
  4. Click ‘Sign in.’ The ‘Elsevier account’ page opens.
  5. Under the ‘Password’ label in the ‘Sign in’ section, click the plus (‘+’) button to enter a password.
    • You will receive an email to confirm that you are the owner of the mailbox to which the email is sent.
  6. Enter and retype your new password.
