Overview of Embase Data (API, Flat Files)

Last updated on May 02, 2024

Embase is a comprehensive biomedical research database from Elsevier. With Embase data, available in XML format via API or flat files, users can combine and text mine internal and external data feeds to aid insight and discovery across drug discovery and development, competitive intelligence, regulatory, market access, pharmacovigilance and medical affairs. Embase contains close to to 44 million records, including over 4.6 million conference abstracts, drawn from:

  • Over 8200 Journals (including over 3000 unique to Embase)
  • 11500+ conferences

While you can use data via those various delivery methods, please note that from one to the other, the XML files have differences in terms of schema and fields. They are not directly interoperable, and you may need to adapt your workflow if you are switching between those different XML formats. We are working towards aligning the formats in the future to make such transitions easier in the future. More details on our transition plans can be found here.
