Embase data formats normalization
Last updated on December 07, 2023
Embase content is provided via different channels; via the user interface as EMBASE.COM but also as data-delivery through API (Application Programming Interface) or as complete downloadable Flat file.
Several reasons contributed to the fact that each delivery channel utilized its own XML schema resulting in three major XML schemas for .COM, API and Flat file.
As we receive increasing requests to use Embase XML data, irrespective of delivery channel, the Elsevier Embase team has undergone a project in 2023 to normalize the Embase XML schema.
For more information on XML delivery modes, their characteristics and application see Which XML delivery mode is the best for my needs?

The process of XML schema normalization has been started in Q1 2023 with the Embase Flat file XML schema as the future default schema. Test XML/JSON files and documentation can be provided via your sales representative to help you migrating.
Since October 2023, the new API schema is available and in 2024 the XML schema of the Embase.COM export will be last.
For Embase API users, Elsevier is providing parallel access to the old and new XML/JSON schema for considerable time (6 months) and is currently planning individual communications to users to start migrating to new schema.
In 2024, all delivery channels are then harmonized, and users can use any Embase channel for XML data feeds, irrespective of delivery channel.
Best practice: when designing a migration strategy to the new XML format, it is advisable for users to implement a XML change strategy. The Embase product and data requirements may change in the future and so the default XML schema as well.
