What is a DOI and how does it help my research?
Last updated on May 21, 2026
A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a persistent, unique identifier that links to a specific document and ensures it can be reliably found online over time. SSRN, as a registered Crossref member, pays for this DOI assignment, and automatically assigns a preprint DOI to qualifying papers at no cost to authors.
Having a DOI offers several practical advantages:
- Persistent links with less risk of broken references
- Improved citation quality through a stable, citable identifier
- Better discoverability, as DOIs are widely indexed and searchable
Consistent metadata across platforms and systems
If the paper is later published in a journal, the preprint DOI remains a useful reference to the original version and its dissemination timeline — even if the journal assigns its own DOI.
What are the criteria for a DOI assignment?
DOIs are assigned to posted preprint submissions that have completed the SSRN review process and include a full-text PDF.
Complete author metadata should be included in the submission to ensure accurate DOI registration and avoid reference issues.
Can a DOI be removed?
No. Once a DOI is assigned, it becomes a permanent record of that preprint. Revisions do not affect the original DOI assignment. Because DOIs are designed to be persistent, neither the DOI string nor the assignment itself can be changed or deleted after registration. If a paper is retracted or withdrawn, its DOI will redirect to a retraction or withdrawal notice on SSRN's website.
Should a posted preprint be replaced with an accepted or published version?
No. Please do not replace the preprint.
Instead, revise the preprint and include the DOI of the published version in the Publication Details for Manuscript Identification section.
If you have permission to post the version of record, create a new submission for the published version. This helps keep the preprint DOI intact and avoids redirecting readers away from the original preprint.
What should I do if my preprint meets the requirements but hasn't been assigned a DOI?
DOI assignment typically occurs within a few business days after the review process has been completed. Contact SSRN Support through Eva or via the email link at the bottom of this page.
