What are my paper's Citation and References on SSRN?
Last updated on March 11, 2026
The reference component automatically pulls references from the paper’s PDF after it has been approved. Full references are displayed at the bottom of the public abstract page, and the number of references extracted will appear in the Paper Statistics box, with a link to go directly to the full list. References to SSRN papers or with a Crossref DOI are hyperlinked to their online version. The extraction process may miss or misinterpret references in certain papers, specifically legal documents or those with unconventional formatting.
The second component for citations integrates with Crossref. Once your paper has a DOI and receives external citations, we will include Crossref-based citations in addition to SSRN’s internal counts, providing a more complete picture of dissemination. Citations on SSRN are distinct from Google Scholar and other platforms.
Are there caveats I should know about SSRN references and citations?
- The tool's accuracy may vary, and some papers may have incomplete or incorrect reference extraction. Crossref data reflects external citations and may differ from other indexes. SSRN’s counts are specific to SSRN.
- SSRN staff are unable to manually modify references or citation counts.
- Citations are based on SSRN and Crossref and will vary from Google Scholar and other platforms.
