Why does SciVal show ‘Unknown Institution’ for Top Authors?

In the Trends module of SciVal you can see the top authors that contribute to a given topic of your choice. You can find these under the Authors tab when viewing your chosen topic or publication set.
SciVal displays the institution name for the authors listed here based on affiliation information of the author’s latest paper that SciVal knows of (n.b. SciVal is 1-2 weeks behind of Scopus content). It can’t display the name of a SciVal institution profile when:
- The affiliation ID assigned to the author for this paper isn’t yet mapped in a SciVal institution.
- Scopus created a temporary affiliation when trying to index the paper (the ID of which starts with ‘1’) because it couldn't match the affiliation’s name as provided in the paper to an existing affiliation profile.
The affiliation of a top author can fluctuate between a known institution name and ‘Unknown institution” depending on what changes are made to author and affiliation profiles in Scopus. This does not affect the overall metrics for the author or the institution to which they are affiliated.
