This is the count of Scholarly Output published by an entity (e.g. a university) that have been cited by Patents.
Example: 400 publications from Athena University have been cited by Patents. The Patent-Cited Scholarly Output metrics equals 400.
For customers with access to the Impact module, SciVal collects Patent data from 107 Patent Offices worldwide. From those 107 Ptent Offices, 43 actively cite Scolarly Output covered by SciVal. For all other customers, SciVal collects data from 5 Patent Offices (World, Japanese, European, UK and US Patent Offices).
For customers with access to the Impact module, this metric can also be show as a percentage in both the Impact and Benchmarking modules.
Example: Athena University has published 4,000 Scholarly Outputs, of which 400 have been cited by Patents. Athena University have a Scholarly Output cited by Patents Percentage of 10%.
- Gain an understanding of how much research is being used in the creation of products by seeing the total number of outputs that received patents
- Provide information about the economic impact of research
- Comparing disciplines who are not likely to have research referenced in a patent such as Arts and Humanities
- Evaluating a country that is not covered by the patent offices included in SciVal
