This is the total count of patent citations received by the entity (e.g. a university).
Example: Athena University has 400 publications in Scopus, which have been cited 800 times by 400 patents over the past five years.
Publications are sometimes cited by more than one patent so that this metrics is the total of all citations made.
In this example each patent is citing an average of 2 Athena University publications.
- Gain an understanding of how much research is being used in the creation of products by seeing the total times the outputs have received patent citations
- Provide information about the economic impact of research
- Comparing disciplines who are not likely to have research referenced in a patent such as Arts and Humanities
- Evaluating a country that is not covered by the patent offices used in SciVal
