The number of patents from any source that cite research conducted by the university. Patents are sourced from the World Intellectual Property Organisation, the European Patent Office, and the patent offices of the US, UK, and Japan. THE uses a normalized value of this metric.

THE counts the number of times a patent that is published in the window of the ranking (2017-2021), cites any publication authored by the institution. Those cited publications can range from 2021 to earlier than 1996. Please note that the publication year is therefore the year that the patent documents were published and not the year that the cited Scholarly Outputs were published.

This metric is used in the SDG 9 ranking.
