Currently when you look at a researcher in SciVal you see all the publications they have in their profile. The new home institution filter allows you to see the actual publications productivity of any researcher whilst they've been affiliated with your ‘home’ institution. This filter is available when you’re looking at researchers and groups of researchers.

What is my ‘home’ institution?

Most users of SciVal will be allocated a home institution, which is linked to their user account. This is usually the institution that provided the user with access to SciVal, e.g., I work for Athena University, so my home institution is set as Athena University.

Your home institution is always in bold text in the left-hand panel and has a unique icon:

How does the home institution filter work?

The home institution filter functionality is available for the entity types researchers and groups of researchers. When one of these entities are chosen the default, functionality is to show metrics for all the publications the researcher(s) have written during the selected date range, regardless of their affiliation.

When the home institution filter is selected, SciVal will only display metrics for the papers written by each researcher with the user’s home institution.

In practice, when the home institution filter is selected you will see a decrease in the metrics, except if all publications were written by researchers crediting them to the home institution.

Why is the home institution unavailable?

There are several reasons why the home institution filter is not available:

  • You are analyzing an entity such as an institution or country which is not supported by the filter. The filter supports researchers and groups of researchers.
  • You are looking at a shared group which has been shared across multiple institutions. In that case the home institution associated with the entity may not match your home institution and the filter is not supported.
  • You have no home institution associated to your account. In some cases, no home institution is set up when the SciVal account is created. As a result, you will not have access to the home institution filter.
