How can I import a hierarchy from Pure into SciVal?

Last updated on May 27, 2026

Push the hierarchies from Pure into SciVal and use them to analyse your schools and faculties in SciVal, without the need to manually create them.

The process works best when researcher profiles in Pure contain active and accurate Scopus Author IDs. SciVal needs these IDs to link each researcher to the correct SciVal researcher profile.

Start in Pure

A Pure administrator selects the organisation structure to push into SciVal.

Match in SciVal

SciVal uses Scopus Author IDs to match researchers to SciVal profiles.

Manage in SciVal

The SciVal administrator can review, share, unshare and adjust the hierarchy.

Frequently asked questions

What does this integration do?

If your institution uses Pure and SciVal, you can select one or more of your organisation structures in Pure and push it into SciVal as a researcher hierarchy. This helps your institution analyse departments, faculties, schools or other organisational units in SciVal without recreating the structure manually.

What happens after the hierarchy is pushed from Pure?

Once the Pure administrator has selected the organisation structure and started the push, the hierarchy is sent to SciVal. The SciVal administrator receives an email explaining how successful the process was.

How does SciVal match researchers from Pure?

SciVal links researchers to Scopus Author IDs. The process works best when researcher profiles in Pure contain active Scopus Author IDs, because SciVal uses these IDs to connect each person to the correct researcher profile. If researchers do not contain a Scopus Author ID, SciVal will use the Scopus Author Feedback Wizard to try and match the researcher to an ID, using details such as the first name, last name, instituiton name and any research papers. SciVal will only match a researcher to an ID if it is 100% confident of the match.

What does the SciVal import process do with unmatched researchers?

The import process allows you to review unmatched researchers, check that the correct profiles have been selected, and add the researchers to the correct part of the hierarchy. This helps ensure that the final structure in SciVal reflects the organisation structure selected in Pure.

Can the corrected Scopus Author IDs be used to improve Pure data?

Yes. Scopus Author IDs identified or corrected during the SciVal import process can be used to update the corresponding researcher profiles in Pure. This can improve matching accuracy for future hierarchy pushes.

Who can see the hierarchy once it is created in SciVal?

By default, the hierarchy is shared with users at your institution. This means users can find and use the institution-provided hierarchy in SciVal for analysis.

Can the SciVal administrator unshare the hierarchy?

Yes. The SciVal administrator can manage sharing and choose to unshare the hierarchy where needed.

Can the hierarchy be edited after it has been created?

Yes. The SciVal administrator can make adjustments to the hierarchy after it has been created. For example, they can:

  • add researchers;
  • remove researchers;
  • move researchers into the correct part of the hierarchy;
  • update groups where needed;
  • add tags to help organise and find researchers or groups later.

Can tags be added?

Yes. Tags can be added to researchers and researcher groups in SciVal. Tags can help administrators organise, segment and retrieve groups for later analysis.

What should we do before pushing a Pure hierarchy?

Before pushing the hierarchy, check that researcher profiles in Pure contain current and active Scopus Author IDs wherever possible. This improves matching quality and reduces the amount of manual review required in SciVal.
