How are the author count and Scholarly Output counts in the Summary page of the Overview module calculated?

The number of authors in Overview is a deduplicated count of authors at the institution who have contributed to the 'Scholarly output' (i.e. the number of papers published) at that institution. Both the Author count and 'Scholarly Output' are deduplicated.

How

If three authors from the same institution write one article together, we will only count that article once as 'Scholarly Output'. At the same time, we will count each author individually as an author of that institution, so in this particular case 'Scholarly Output' = 1, Author count = 3.

However, if an author publishes five articles at the same institution, we will only count this author once, so in this particular case 'Scholarly Output' = 5, Author count =1.

For the Author count, the deduplication is done differently depending on the entity that is being looked at:

  • For Research Areas, Topics, Scopus Sources and Publication Sets, the author count is a deduplicated count of Scopus author IDs for all authors on the publications
  • For Institutions it uses the SciVal Institution ID to find Researchers that belong to the Institution and deduplicates the list based upon the Scopus author ID
  • For Countries, it looks at the Affiliations linked to the chosen Country, and deduplicates the Scopus author IDs to give a count
