How do I use Boolean terms (AND, OR, NOT) in drug safety data searches?
Last updated on August 08, 2019Boolean search terms can be used when performing a Drug safety data search in PharmaPendium. This will allow you to answer questions like:
Show me all the approved antineoplastic drugs where Cardiac arrhythmia and changes in red blood cell numbers were observed preclinical.
This information helps to:
- Learn from drugs that have an adverse events profile similar to yours.
- Quickly understand if the co-occurrence of adverse events is a significant concern by looking at precedent drug information
- Optimize your preclinical/clinical design to mitigate risk of serious adverse events
- Efficiently retrieve a list of relevant drugs based on your advanced search criteria, thus helping you mitigate the risk of missing critical information
In the upcoming release of PharmaPendium (22 August 2019), it will also be possible to further include limitations on species AND adverse effects in the same search. For example:
Show me all the approved antineoplastic drugs where Cardiac arrhythmias and changes in red blood cell numbers were obeserved in both rat and human.
This supports the preclinical analysis of adverse event phenotype, experimental design and animal model selection.
In the following video (9 min) we explore how you can work with Boolean operators in drug safety data searches in PharmaPendium in detail. It covers:
- Why work with Boolean operators,
- Using the Drug safety module
- A search example with Boolean operators.
