How do I use the Engineering Village AI feature?

Engineering Village AI is an advanced tool that applies artificial intelligence to help you efficiently explore academic research content and receive targeted research summaries and insights. Powered by reliable Compendex curated data, Engineering Village AI strives to simplify the research process, support knowledge discovery, and provide updates on the latest advancements in your areas of study.
- At the top of any Engineering Village page, click ‘Engineering Village AI.’ The ‘Explore new topics with Engineering Village AI’ page opens.
- In the ‘What would you like to learn more about?’ box, enter a natural language question, term, or phrase regarding your topic of interest.
- Refer to the ‘Search examples’ beneath the box for samples.
- You may click any of these samples as examples of search queries.
- Press ‘Enter’ or click the magnifying glass search icon to run your query. A summary page opens that contains the information you requested.
Note: Engineering Village AI recommends submitting your queries in English to enhance your experience and ensure relevant search results. For a short overview of the Engineering Village AI feature, click ‘Learn’ at the bottom of the webpage to open the ‘How it works’ flyout page.
Click the keyword query to generate a query based on your search terms, phrase, or question. The generated search query opens as a document results page.
Click the copy (multiple page) icon to copy the search query to another document, email note, blog posting, etc. The ‘Copied to clipboard’ message displays on the bottom right side of the page.
You may view the documents or abstracts in Engineering Village referenced in each bullet or section of the query summary.
- Within the summary response, click a number displayed at the end of a bullet or a section to view the reference(s) for that point. The corresponding reference text opens in a flyout on the right side of the page.
- On the flyout page, you may perform the following actions for an individual reference:
- Click each reference title to retrieve the record page for the corresponding document in Engineering Village.
- Click ‘Controlled terms’ or the down arrow to open the Controlled terms dropdown accordion section.
- Click any of the Controlled terms (signified by being enclosed in elliptical circles) to run a Controlled terms search.
- Refer to this FAQ's ‘Search Controlled terms’ section for further information.
- Click ‘Abstract’ or the down arrow to open the abstract description inline beneath the bullet point or section.
You may export one reference from the individual reference flyout page. From this page, you can select the export format and output type.
- Click ‘Export reference.’ The ‘Export all references’ page opens.
- Select one of the following export formats:
- EndNote - (No output type available)
- BibTeX - (No output type available)
- TXT (ASCII) - (All output types available)
- CSV - (All output types available)
- Excel - (All output types available)
- PDF - (All output types available)
- RTF - (All output types available)
- Select one of the following export output types:
- Detailed record
- Citation
- Abstract
- Click the ‘View references’ link below the summary. All references for that summary open in a flyout on the right side of the page.
- On the flyout page, you may perform the following actions for any of the references:
- Click each reference title to retrieve the record page for the corresponding document in Engineering Village.
- Click Controlled terms or the down arrow to open the Controlled terms dropdown accordion section.
- Click any of the Controlled terms (signified by being enclosed in elliptical circles) to run a Controlled terms search.

You may export all references from the ‘All references’ flyout page. From this page, you can select the export format and output type.
- Click ‘Export all references.’ The ‘Export all references’ page opens.
- Select one of the following export formats:

- TXT (ASCII) - (All output types available)
- CSV - (All output types available)
- Excel - (All output types available)
- PDF - (All output types available)

- Select one of the following export output types:
- Detailed record

You may search for the Controlled terms included in the Compendex documents displayed in the flyout on the right side of the page.
- Click any of the ‘Controlled terms.’ This action generates a search query for the specific Controlled term in Compendex. The Document results page opens. You may further refine your controlled vocabulary search via the ‘Refine results’ pane or by updating your search query.
- Alternately, after clicking ‘View references’ at the bottom of the response, click ‘Controlled terms’ or the down arrow next to this label to open this accordion section.
- Click any of these terms to generate a Controlled terms search query in Compendex. The Document results page opens.
- If desired, you may further refine your controlled vocabulary search via the ‘Refine results’ pane or by updating your search query.
Click the copy (multiple page) icon to copy the summary contents to another document, email note, blog posting, etc. The ‘Copied to clipboard’ message displays on the bottom right side of the page.
- Click the ‘thumb up’ symbol for positive feedback. The ‘thumb down’ button will gray out and be disabled.
- Click the ‘thumb down’ symbol for negative feedback. The ‘thumb up’ button will gray out and be disabled.
Note: You can only click a thumb symbol once for a specific summary. If you provide a positive review, you cannot change your feedback by clicking the ‘thumb down’ symbol, as it has been disabled for this specific summary. Alternately, if you click the ‘thumb down’ button, you cannot change your negative feedback for this specific summary as the ‘thumb up’ button will be disabled.
Three questions relevant to the topic summary will be displayed beneath the ‘Go deeper’ section heading.
- To delve further into a topic of interest, click one of the questions displayed beneath the ‘Go deeper’ section label.
- The question you selected and a new corresponding summary will be displayed.
- Each time you click a question under the ‘Go deeper’ section label, a new summary will be displayed that contains the response from the question you selected.
- A new set of ‘Go deeper’ questions will be displayed beneath the summary.
- Each set of ‘Go deeper’ questions and corresponding summaries will be displayed on the same page for easier reference.
- You may exit the Engineering Village AI feature by going to another page (e.g., conducting a Quick or Expert search, accessing your search history, reviewing your alerts or selected records, etc.) or closing your browser session.
- Refer to the previous sections of this FAQ for the various features of the AI summary page and how to use each component.
You may enter a new topic of interest into the ‘What would you like to learn more about’ box at any time during your search session.
- This text box will remain at the top of the page for easier use.
- All your previous questions and corresponding summaries will be retained on the page until you access another page of Engineering Village or close your browser session.
