How can I work with Author search results?
Last updated on March 19, 2026
You can work with your author search results in many ways. Author search results contain a listing of authors' profiles. These profiles contain the authors' preferred names as well as variant names they have used for their published documents.
Note: Only authors of Compendex records are available via Author search. Your institution must be subscribed to the Compendex database and Author search must be enabled for your institution to access this feature.
How
Select a topic below to find out more about how to work with Author search results.
- Click the ‘Search’ tab at the top of any Engineering Village page.
- Scroll down and click ‘Author.’ A new Author search page opens.
- Run a new Author search.
- Edit your search terms as needed in the ‘Author last name,’ ‘Author first name,’ and/or ‘Affiliation name’ search box(es) and click the magnifying glass icon next to ‘Affiliation name’ to run the search.
- Alternatively, you may enter or edit the entry for the author's ‘ORCiD’ and click the magnifying glass search icon to run the ORCiD search query.
The Display dropdown above the search results allows you to specify how many Author results you would like to display per page.
The default is 25; you can increase this total to 50 or 100. You may change this default option on the ‘Results’ tab of the My preferences page.
To change the default number for this session, from the ‘Display’ label, click the number ‘25’ or the down arrow, and select either ‘50’ or ‘100’ from the dropdown. The page refreshes with the new number of results displayed. Your new setting stays throughout your session, regardless of how many searches you run, until you end your session.
Count (DESC) – (total number of Compendex records in descending frequency order) is the default sort method. Additionally, you may choose to sort your results using one of the methods listed below by selecting the desired option from the ‘Sort by’ dropdown list located above the search results.
- Count (ASC) - (Ascending)
- Relevance
- Author (A-Z and Z-A)
- Affiliation (A-Z and Z-A)
- City (A-Z and Z-A)
- Country/Region (A-Z and Z-A)
The Author result page contains the following details about each author:
- Author's preferred name
- Author's variant name(s) - (a maximum of 3 variant names will be listed if available in the author's profile)
- Three most frequently used subject areas listed in the author's published documents.
- Author's affiliation name
- Author's affiliation city
- Author's affiliation country/region
- Author’s ORCiD (if available)
You can view the total number of Compendex records written by the author via the ‘View XX records’ button on the Author results page.
- From the ‘Name’ column, click ‘View XX records’ to view the author’s documents from the Author results page. An Expert search results page opens.
- From the Expert search results page, you may create alerts, save searches, create an RSS feed, select records, and manage search results as with any Expert search query.
- Click the ‘Author results’ icon in the bar beneath the search query to return to the Author results page.
- Select the row for the author for whom you want to create an email alert.
- Click ‘Create Alert.’ The label changes to ‘Remove Alert’ with a green check mark, indicating that the alert has been created.
- This alert will be displayed at the top of the ‘Alerts and Saved searches’ page.
- If you want to make any modifications to this alert (e.g., change the alert name, add email recipients, change the alert frequency, edit the output, etc.), go to the ‘Actions’ column on the ‘Alerts and Saved searches’ page to complete your desired edits.
- Follow the screen prompts as described in How do I create and use email alerts?
- If you want to remove this alert, click ‘Remove Alert.’ The label changes back to ‘Create Alert’ without a check mark, indicating that the email alert has been removed.
The author records (also known as author profiles) are maintained in Scopus. You may request corrections to the details displayed in these records via a link to Scopus.
- From the Author results, find your profile name and click ‘View Scopus Author Profile.’ The corresponding Author details page in Scopus opens.
- Follow the on-screen prompts in Scopus to update the author profile as desired.
- Refer to ‘How can I request changes to author details?’ for further instructions.
If an author’s ORCiD is available on the Author results page, click the ‘iD’ icon to access the author’s profile at ORCiD.
