How do I take notes on the new Elsevier eBooks platform?
Last updated on April 01, 2026
Use the Notes and Highlights feature to highlight text and attach notes. The steps differ slightly between the web browser, desktop app, and mobile app.
In a web browser
- Open your eBook.
- Click and drag to select the text you want to annotate.
- Release the mouse button.
- From the pop-up menu, choose a highlight colour, or select Add note to attach a note to the selection.
- Highlights can be copied and pasted into another program.
In the desktop app
- Select the text you want to annotate.
- Choose a highlight colour from the menu at the top.
- Select Highlight or Highlight with Note.
- To copy or export a highlight and any attached note, right-click the highlight and choose the relevant option.
In the mobile app
- Press and hold the text you want to annotate.
- Drag the selection handles to adjust the selection.
- Tap Make Highlight.
- Tap the highlight again to change its colour or manage the note.
Where do all my notes appear?
Notes and highlights are listed together in the Notes and Highlights panel for each title, and they sync across the web, desktop, and mobile versions when you are signed in to the same account.
What about my old Inkling notes?
Notes and Highlights replaces the previous Inkling note-taking experience. Notes transferred from Inkling are stored separately from the pages of your eBook — see Why are my Inkling notes not shown inside my eBook?
