Overview of ScienceDirect Journals Flat Files
Last updated on August 08, 2025
ScienceDirect data flat files consist of semi-structured data that does not obey the tabular structure of data models associated with relational databases or other forms of data tables but nonetheless contains tags or other markers to separate semantic elements and enforce hierarchies of records and fields within the data.
The Flat File is delivered in batches of content as ZIP files that contain individual XML files.
For all customers entitled after October 2023 the ScienceDirect data is delivered as a flat file to customers via SFTP. The articles are placed in ZIP folders (1000 individual XML files per ZIP).
The data is separated into a backfile folder and an updates folder (which is updated daily).
Specific articles can be retrieved the Fetch API.
