What is SSRN’s policy on the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in papers posted at SSRN?

Last updated on February 14, 2023

There has been a rise of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies which are expected to be used to create content in all areas of scholarly communication, including preprints, conference abstracts and papers, law reviews and other early research communications, all of which are hosted by SSRN, Elsevier’s preprint server. The SSRN policy is in line with Elsevier's Publishing Ethics for Editors Policy.

In all content submitted to SSRN, authors should only use AI technologies to improve the readability and language of their work and not to replace key researcher/author tasks such as producing insights or theories, analyzing and interpreting data or drawing conclusions and presenting viewpoints. Applying the technology should be done with human oversight and control and authors should carefully review and edit the result, because AI can generate authoritative-sounding output that can be incorrect, incomplete or biased. Authors are ultimately responsible and accountable for the contents of their work. SSRN looks forward to exploring this new technology and continues to develop policies that reflect our commitment to greater transparency, high levels of research integrity and clear guidance to authors, readers, contributors and partners, and as such we reserve the right to remove papers that we believe violate standards of publication ethics and research integrity or that do not meet our content policies.

Authors should:
  • Provide a disclosure statement within the paper detailing any use of AI technologies.
  • Not list AI and AI technologies as an author.
  • Not cite AI as an author.
