Tutorial text: Registering and Signing In

Welcome to the Registering and Signing In ScienceDirect tutorial.

When you are signed in ScienceDirect, you can:

• Utilize search alerts, topic alerts, journal and book series alerts, and personalized recommendations
• Purchase articles
• Create a list of your favorite journals and books
• Set defaults and customize your personal ScienceDirect sessions

To obtain a ScienceDirect username and password, you need to register. Click Register.

Enter your first and family names in the fields provided.

Enter your email address.

Using your institutional email address is recommended.

Enter a password (5 - 20 characters).

By completing the ScienceDirect registration, you are accepting the Elsevier Registered User Agreement and Privacy Policy.

Links are available here to access and review this information.

Click Create.

The username to be used with your password is displayed.

Select the check-box to receive emails about future updates, releases, or related Elsevier products.

Click Done.

You are automatically signed in to your personal account and the Remember me feature is activated.

If you are using your personal computer, you do not have to sign out to end your session. Simply, close your browser window.

If you are using a shared or public device and want to end your session, click on your name and then select Sign out.

Now, let's look at the sign in options in ScienceDirect.

To sign in to ScienceDirect, you have a couple of options.

If you have an Elsevier username and password, enter them in the fields provided and click Sign in.

The Remember me box is pre-selected. ScienceDirect will remember your username/password and personal settings next time you use this computer.

If this is not your computer or you do not want to associate your username/password and personal settings with this computer, de-select the check-box.

If you have an Athens account, you can click OpenAthens login to go to the OpenAthens authentication page.

If you want to use your institution’s login, you can click Other institution login.

If you are registered in ScienceDirect, personalized features (for example, Alerts) are available to you when you use your Athens or institution's login.

Here, select your institution from the list or do a search.

To choose from the list, select your institution's location or group and click Go.

Then click on the institution link to access the appropriate login page.

To do a search, begin entering your institution name in the search field. ScienceDirect will display a list of institution names.

To go to the institution's login page, hover over the appropriate institution name and click Login.

If you use the same desktop for your next ScienceDirect session, your institution's login link will be available to you in the Sign in box.

Now, let's go back to the ScienceDirect home page.

When you are signed in, your name appears at the top of each page to remind you that your personal session is active.
