Tutorial text: Performing an advanced search

Welcome to ScienceDirect's Performing an Advanced Search tutorial.

Here you can use one or more of the fields to formulate your search.

For an example, let's search for articles related to developments in heart attack research.

Enter the terms or phrases which must appear in the documents retrieved.

Quotation marks can be used to specify terms which must appear next to each other in the document.

We can use Boolean operators to include or exclude addition terms in our search.

We know the publication we want to search, so let's enter that here.

Begin keying the publication title and ScienceDirect will suggest titles that contain those terms.

If we don't specify a journal or book title, all available publications will be included in our search.

We can enter a publishing year or date range for the documents. Or leave the field blank if we want documents from all years available.

Using a hyphen, let's specify a date range.

We can limit our search to documents by specific authors. And, using a minus sign, we can exclude specific authors or collaboration.

If there are terms that must appear within the title, abstract, or keywords, enter those here.

We're looking for trending developments, so let's specify that here.

Volume, issue, page range, and/or ISSN or ISBN can be specified or we can leave these fields blank to search the complete volumes available.

Bibliographic references cited at the end of documents can be specified.

We can limit the search to particular types of documents. If we don't select any document types, all types will be included in our search.

Select Search to execute the search.

Our search criteria displays above the search results.

Here, we can edit our search terms and rerun the search.

If our original search is too restrictive, we can eliminate some or all of the elements of our search.

Our search results are updated to reflect the changes.

To return to the advanced search form, select Advance search.

To clear the advanced search form and return to the previous page, select Cancel.
