Set up remote access for your users
Last updated on July 09, 2025Remote access allows your users to easily access your Elsevier subscriptions anytime and anywhere without being limited to being on-campus or in the office. Many institutions already have this mechanism in place.
Administrators can contact us below to select a preferred remote access method for their users; this request will be sent to our Customer Support team.
Remote access does not have to be enabled for each Elsevier solution separately.
Allow users to sign into our products with their institutional login details.
Available to customers who are members of any of the Shibboleth/OpenAthens federations that we support.
Allow users to set up individual Elsevier accounts domain and confirm their institutional access by clicking a link in an email sent to their institutional email box.
We will ask customers to provide the list of valid email domains for their institution which we then verify through internal data sources.
Registration ID
You can generate Registration IDs and distribute them to your users. A user then obtains access by activating the Registration ID.
There are two ways to generate Registration IDs:
- If you already have access to Elsevier’s Admin Tool, you can generate registration IDs from within the tool.
- Ask Customer Support to generate a set number of Registration IDs for you to provide to your users.
The registration IDs provide an individual the ability to access to subscriptions from anywhere for a limited period of time determined by you. This period can be renewed or extended upon your request.
Institutional instruction text
This option enables us to display a customized message giving users instructions on how to obtain remote access via their institution. It can be used, for example, to include a link to the institutions proxy server portal or provide instructions for signing in via VPN.
Detailed information regarding the access methods we support is available here.
