Can we use OpenAthens with Elsevier?
Last updated on August 26, 2025Yes.
OpenAthens is integrated with Elsevier. We will consume your metadata within 24 hours of it becoming available through OpenAthens federation.
Click the sections below to find out more.
When your IdP is available in OpenAthens federation, contact us via the Email option at the bottom of this page.
In many cases OpenAthens or a reseller will contact us in your name. We require that you be cc-ed on such requests.
To limit access to given groups of users within your IdP, you can use a scope value, released as:
http://eduserv.org.uk/federation/attributes/1.0/organisationid
to Elsevier SP. Examples of scope values are published at OpenAthens list of organizations.
Alternatively, if scope doesn’t solve your use case, you can release eduPersonEntitlement in one of the two ways:
urn:oid:1.3.6.1.4.1.5923.1.1.1.7
or
urn:mace:dir:attribute-def:eduPersonEntitlement
Elsevier doesn’t get these values from federation metadata, so you’ll need to communicate them to us in advance.
No.
OpenAthens complimentary proxy service is to be used with publishers that don’t support SAML based authentication. Elsevier does, and for SAML authentication to work the user’s IP address is not relevant.
For users SAML is better than proxy because if they land on any product not-authenticated, they can navigate to OpenAthens authentication point by searching for your organization or institution within our WAYF discovery service, sign in and come back seamlessly. We also remember the institution they signed in so next time the path is even shorter.
For proxy there’s no such option. In order to authenticate the user must always start at a 3rd party and click through to Elsevier sites.
Yes.
OpenAthens redirector knows the syntax of all commonly used WAYFless URLs and you should be able to use it without problems.
If you have any questions about or problems with the redirector, please contact OpenAthens support.
