Results page tutorial text

Welcome to Engineering Village. In this tutorial, I will show you how to review and refine your search results in order to pinpoint the material you need along with a few other tips. Let us get started.

Your search results will load directly below the search form, making it easy to see and change your original search, if desired. You will also see the number of results your search retrieved here.

Each record features a summary of information, which can provide some insight into whether or not your results match with what you were hoping to find. You can also click ‘Show preview’ to read a brief summary about the document, or click the title and view the record page. The detailed record page, available through the link here, provides important information such as Accession number, DOI, numerical data indexing, and more.

Also, look for the full-text buttons. These indicate which items are part of your institution’s collection and will link you to the full article. Note that the ‘Check Local Full-text’ button shown in this video will appear as your institution’s logo in your own account.

Once you have a sense of the type of results you have retrieved, a next step is to refine and further narrow down your list. To do this, use the list of facets available here on the left-hand column. Facets can be used to help identify research trends, experts, potential research partners, and more. These facets are based on your results and the database or databases you selected. Under each facet, for example, the Controlled Vocabulary facet here, a list of the most recurring terms related to your search appear, along with the corresponding number of records that match the term. You can also expand the list here and even look at a graphical depiction of the facet results.

Look through the different facets and select which you want to either limit your search results to, or exclude from your results. And, if you are not satisfied with how your actions affect your results, you can always remove an item from your search here.

Once you are satisfied with your refined results, be sure to remember to save your search. This will save you time and make it easier to pick up from where you left off next time you return to Engineering Village. If you have not created an account or are not signed in, you can do that here. It is free, quick, and easy to do.

As you look through your results, you may find records that you want to share records with colleagues. You can do so by selecting the items you want and then using the features here.
