Why doesn't ClinicalKey provide access to all ancillary content mentioned in Books?

Last updated on September 05, 2025

ClinicalKey is a product that provides clinical answers supported by full text from more than a thousand Elsevier Book titles, among other content sources. Because Elsevier Books are also purchased by individual clinicians, many of the titles reside on some type of individual e-platform (Expert Consult, Student Consult, Evolve, etc.). On those platforms, authors often include a number of ancillary resources, such as video libraries, additional references, self-assessment Q&As, podcasts, other audio (heart and lung sounds), morphology and pathology specimens, lecture slides, etc.

Please Note: It is important to stress that these are enhancements to the core printed text, which is a standalone resource on its own - otherwise, the title would no longer be offered in print.

ClinicalKey as a platform has very specific technical requirements for content ingestion and delivery, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to standardizing all the ancillary content across all Book titles. Those that were in scope for ClinicalKey conversion and delivery were ancillary references (all of which are included for all Books in ClinicalKey) and video content (we have converted ancillary Book videos to present them in a way that is organized and provides a good user experience).

Because ClinicalKey's product mission is to provide clinical answers that support patient care use cases, the rest of ancillary content is not in scope for this platform. For instances in which Book XML contains links to such ancillaries that aren't functional on ClinicalKey, our team is working to suppress those links from appearing. We apologize for any confusion these may cause.
