How do I claim access to an individual journal subscription?
Last updated on June 11, 2025
- After you have logged in at the journal website, go to “About” just below the journal title. Select “Access” and choose “Activate Online Access” from the options. The claim page will open.
- On the “Claim Online Access” page, please enter your “Online Access Reference number” in the Account Number box and leave the second box ("last name") blank. You can find your “Online Access Reference number” on your correspondence from [email protected] with the subject line: “Your Elsevier Correspondence” or on your print mailing label (if your order includes print issues). Your account number may start with zero’s (e.g., 00175..) and if so, please enter the whole number, including the preceding zero’s. Your number might include a hyphen and if so, please include the entire number, with the hyphen, including digits before and after the hyphen.
- After entering the Online Access Reference Number in the "Account Number" field, click the ACTIVATE CLAIM button below the “Last Name” box.
- If the code is accepted, then you will see a success message and this means the online subscription access to the journal is applied to your account, based on the terms of your subscription.
- If the code is not accepted, you will see an error message such as “This Account Number does not appear to be valid.” When this happens, we suggest the following:
- Please double check the values you are entering and try again. Please review information in point 2 above.
- You may have already activated this online subscription and it cannot be activated/claimed again. Please check the “My Access” link under your profile on the journal website to check if this subscription is already part of your account.
- It may be that your subscription has expired, and you cannot activate the code after the subscription has expired.
- If you need more assistance, please contact a Customer Service Representative with the options listed below for Phone or Email.
