What are the Gates Foundation preprint requirements for posting on SSRN?
Last updated on January 22, 2025
The Gates Foundation's new open access policy came into effect on January 1st, 2025. This policy stipulates that grantees must now post their Gates Foundation funded manuscript as a preprint and that this posting and any subsequent publication is open access and available under a CC BY license. In addition, they require the disclosures that are outlined below.
SSRN can support Gates Foundation funded researchers in meeting this requirement. Please ensure that you provide SSRN with the following information for your Gates Foundation funded preprint.
- Funding Statement for your research (tell us all sources of your funding, including Gates Foundation).
- The specific Gates Foundation Grant number (it is not mandatory to provide grant numbers for other sources of funding but is helpful).
- A brief data availability statement indicating where all underlying data in the paper can be found including any URL links to sources of data (view Elsevier’s data availability statement guidelines for more information).
- A competing interest statement for all authors. If you are unsure how to create this, visit Elsevier’s Declaration Tool for step-by-step guide to create and download a competing interests statement.
- An ethics approval statement – preferably including the name of the board and/or approval number if the paper is medical or health related or any human participants are included in the study.
- A trial registration number, if necessary and if the paper is medical or health related or any human participants are included in the study.
- A CC BY license. Please confirm that you are using a CC BY license. SSRN indicates this license selection on the abstract page when posted.
