What happens in production?
Last updated on January 17, 2019
Once and article has been accepted for production it is sent for copy editing and typesetting. A proof will be sent to the author for approval, and any queries that come up during copy editing will be raised for the author at this stage. We use an online proofing system called Proof Central, this allows for the author to directly input the corrections required into the proof, negating the need for corrections to be manually added, which reduces the possibility of errors being introduced. You will receive an email with a link to the proof. Help files for the online proofing system are available on the proofing website. Once the corrections are submitted via the system the proof will be checked by our suppliers and any further queries will be sent to the project manager. The project manager may contact you for further advice if needed.
The proof reader and the editors of the work see proofs at the same time as the author, and once all corrections are returned to us the proof is amended and a final proof created. Whilst the proofs are being checked the index is being created.
Once all the articles for the work have passed through production we agree the final running order, and then the completed work is sent to press for printing, and to Science Direct for publication online.
The massive size of a reference work means that we phase the articles through to production as soon as they are ready so that everyone involved (copy editor, typesetter, proof reader, editors, indexer) can manage the workload and ensure that we can publish on schedule.
