Do I need to obtain permissions to reuse images I found in Image Finder?

Last updated on December 18, 2025

Before you can use Image Finder to source images, you must acknowledge the legal disclaimer. This is important because reusing images is NOT an unconstrained activity. For many images, reusing requires permission from the owner(s) of the image and often attract fees. Image Finder cannot determine whether permissions are required or not for most of the images that you can find. And, for those images, Image Finder will not be able to determine the reuse fees, if any.

If you find images in Image Finder, and those images are NOT classified as 'Rights free', you are wholly responsible for ensuring that you obtain permission to reuse them and that any associated fees are paid.

Some images have been determined to be 'Rights free' and you can use these without constraint. To find these images, you can use the Rights free filter. See How do I use the search filters?

  1. Legal disclaimer: Read the disclaimer carefully. Before an image can be used in a new publication, you must be certain that you have established the right to use it in that publication, taking into account any other jurisdictional criteria that may apply (e.g. country of publication).
  2. Non Solus permissions page [Elsevier internal]: You can get more information by clicking on the link on this page to permissions.
  3. Acknowledge: Click 'OK' to acknowledge the disclaimer.
